Tesla Solar Roof: Cost Estimate with Powerwall 2 and Electricity Costs Included

Concerns of The New Tesla Solar Roof

The publisher of this video Ben Sullins Data Geek, brought up some great points:

But from strictly a roofers stand point lets examine another angle to the roof cost estimate.  Solar, Tesla, Roof, Cost, Estimate

Tesla solar tile

I see many other pertinent questions that should be addressed before even talking about the final cost of the roofing.

Here is a brief list of things that most people may not understand or possibly take for granted concerning roofing.

  1. How does anybody really know the roofing product will last 30 years +let alone the solar functioning parts of the integrated product?
  2. Who will literally do the installs? A roofing contractor, a group of Solar City employees or perhaps other third party affiliates?
  3. Who will service the “panels”? A roofing contractor? Or perhaps both a roofer and a solar tech?

Financing

  1. I  disagree with Ben’s opinion on Tesla possibly having exclusive tax breaks, only because I believe they already may be in effect.  Ben mentioned of the Tesla solar roof being a combined system which could possibly allow for a 30% government discount on their complete system compared to another solar contractor who would only get a discount on his solar system without roofing included.
  2. But from my understanding the PACE financing programs already offer to include  roofing with a combined solar system to get the 30% maximum  (give or take) on a government allowed discount if the roofing system itself meets the requirement for a title 21 compliant roof.
  3. This would be hard to market speedily into the retail market for a few more reasons:

Lawsuits

  1. I don’t know of many roofing contractors that would be willing to take a chance on installing new roofing products such as tesla solar roof without knowing for certainty the terms of the warranty as to protect them in case of a lawsuit caused by a product failure. And really who knows for certain if this will last, especially since it hasn’t been time tested.
  2. Over the last 25 years I’ve witnessed several so called “50 year warranted” roofing products fail miserably and ended up in class-action lawsuits.
  3. Who will ultimately be responsible for failures that may occur due to material malfunction or perhaps a workmanship issue?

Installation

  1. Another small caveat to pushing out sales is the availability of qualified labor installers.
  2. Since this product, tesla solar roof is a slate style product it puts limits on who can install this product. Slate roofers make only a minute slice of the roofing labor industry.
  3. I could be wrong but I’m really wondering how long it might take to properly train installers to put these roofs on. It takes years to learn how to properly roof correctly.
  4. Slate is also one the hardest and most time-consuming roofs to install.

In closing:

I think the textured glass with the aesthetic look as one sees it from various angles is a neat idea.

The fact that this unique type of glass can produce solar is what makes  it a possible diamond in the rough.

But in all practicality, I’m not seeing or imagining how it could be user friendly enough to be marketable now.

It seems like the glass could be used for other applications as well and may offer advances with it into the roofing/solar roofing field in years to come.

I’m intrigued to see what the Tesla solar roof/Solarcity team will to have offer.

Kudos to Mr. Musk for having the ingenuity and spunk to give this peculiar solar roofing project a spectacular launch.

Switching to a cool roof can be a smart and environmentally-conscious decision. That will not only benefits the planet but also saves you money in the long run. A cool roof is designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than traditional ones, to keep your home cooler during hot weather. This technology has gained demand in recent years due to its numerous advantages for both homeowners and commercial property owners.

Benefits of Cool Roof:

One of the most significant benefits of a cool roof is its energy efficiency. By oppose back more sunlight away from the building, these roofs reduce the amount of heat absorbed. This results in less heat transfer into the interior. As a result, the demand for air conditioning decreases, leading to enough energy savings and lower utility bills. In warmer climates, this can make a substantial difference in annual cooling costs.

Moreover, the reduced energy consumption associated with cool roofs also translates into a reduced carbon footprint. By using less electricity to cool the building, you are indirectly contributing to the fight against climate change. As global efforts to combat environmental issues become more intense, every small step counts, and choosing cool roofs can be one such step that positively impacts the environment.

Apart from energy savings, these roofs also tend to have a longer lifespan compared to traditional roofs. The reduced heat inclusion means that the roofing materials are subject to less thermal stress, which can lead to fewer cracks and a longer life for the roof. This means fewer repair and replacement costs over time, providing additional savings for the owner of the house.

Lastly, in some areas, there might be tax credits available for installing these roofs.

Governments and local municipalities often support the adoption of energy-efficient technologies, and cool roofs mostly qualify for these programs. Taking advantage of these incentives can further offset the initial investment and make switching to a cool roof even more cost-effective.

GAF has added a few new members to their line of color selections, available only in the HD series.
These shingles are rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) for use in Title 24 projects — so California-based contractors can now offer homeowners a wider variety of color options with the iconic Timberline HD® look to meet their cool roofing needs.

When it comes to home maintenance and renovation, one of the most critical aspects is ensuring a sturdy and well-maintained roof. Modesto homeowners must grasp roofing cost influencers to make informed project choices. The roofing price in Modesto can vary significantly depending on various factors, and it’s important to be aware of these factors before beginning on any roofing project.

Factors of Roofing Price:

One of the primary factors of roofing prices is the type of roofing material chosen. Different materials, such as asphalt shingles, metal, tile, and wood shakes, have different costs. Asphalt shingles are generally the most budget-friendly option, while metal and tile tend to be more expensive due to their durability and longevity.

Roofing price

Another significant factor is the size and design of the roof. Larger roofs with complicated designs or multiple slopes typically require more labor and materials, resulting in higher costs. Additionally, the condition of the current roof and any necessary repairs or removals can also impact the overall price.

The skills and experience of the roofing contractor also play a crucial role in determining prices. Established and reputable roofing companies may charge more for their services. But they often offer higher-quality workmanship and materials, leading to a longer-lasting roof.

Local economic conditions can also influence roofing prices in the Modesto area. Factors affecting roofing costs include the cost of living, roofing materials availability, and service demand.

For homeowners in Modesto, obtaining multiple quotes from different roofing contractors is recommended. This allows them to compare prices, services, and materials offered by different companies, make sure that they make an informed decision that best fits their budget and needs.

Although I don’t presently subscribe to the service, I thought the content about roofing prices in Modesto area was interesting and worth investigating.

I will do a follow up blog on this service in the near future.
